  1. It s 1962 Bertie lives with her family, and she s afraid Of rats, woodsheds, missiles, and even her own father Bertie tries to make a place to hide, but each time she gets settled, her sanctuary is destroyed until there is nothing left for Bertie to do but confront her fears. This story took a bit to get going I liked Bertie s brother most of all and would have like to have gotten into his head a bit Bertie is a girl who is afraid of everything and needs to learn to trust God with her life This b [...]

  2. I was excited to get this book and read it however when I started reading it I was quite disappointed It was very depressing and I like to read books that make me feel better for having read them It is the story of a young girl who is afraid of everything in this time period She is deathly frightened of her father and lives in fear every waking moment of doing something wrong that would cause him to take her out to the wood shed All the way through the book she feels unaccepted, like she doesn t [...]

  3. Oh hey I won a First Reads thingy.I made a mistake with this book I read the author bio before I read the book, and I decided that I don t agree with the author about some things, so I was going to be disappointed in the book I shouldn t have done that, because I liked the book a lot Remember to make decisions in the proper order. The book has a rustic feeling similar to the feeling in Bridge to Terabithia, which has less of a connection to the current events of its period I think this book has a [...]

  4. I was lucky enough to win this through a Good Reads drawing I m in the middle of the book at present and haven t formed a definite review in my mind If there are others out there who have read it, do share your thoughts about the book Thanks I appreciated the opportunity to read this book However,I had hoped to pass this book on to my granddaughters to read I had hoped to share with them a bit about a world crisis we dealt with as children, much like they are dealing now with the war in Iraq and [...]

  5. I recieved this book from a giveaway It is actually considered juvenile fiction and I thoroughly enjoyed it I liked the authors style and description of the characters Thinking back to my childhood, I could relate to the way Bertie the main character thinks The book did have some Christian references, but I do not feel that it would ruin the book for some people A great book for preteens, or young teens and their parents There is a lot to discuss about this book I would reccomend this book and p [...]

  6. I actually re read this one 8 months after reading it for the first time, and was still struck by the same thing It does a fascinating job of covering the mindset and the history of small town America in the 60s, but I was perturbed by the main character s extensive fear, both of events outside her home, as well as of her own failures and those within her family She was so fearful, I wondered at times whether we were going to see abuse later in the story line As her well adjusted family life con [...]

  7. I liked this book which I won in a giveaway But I m not 100% sure who the audience was for the book On many levels, it seemed like a kids book But the language was for a much older reader Perhaps young adult.Roberta s life in the early 60s, during the Cold War, was ruled by fear She s afraid of absolutely everything and lives in a fantasy world to help her get through her fear.

  8. Bertie s voice is exceptionally vivid her daydreams were beautifully realized, as was the tempestuous world of 1962 in which she lives While the plot, in and of itself, was not as engaging as I had hoped, the lush world that Bertie s War depicts is well worth the read.

  9. Very sweet book It would be great for a young girl, Bertie learns several wonderful lessons that are relevant today.

  10. I just won the giveaway to get an advanced copy of this book When I receive the book, I ll let you know what I think.
